I'm taking a semester abroad hopefully next year second semester (we only have two semesters - before xmas and after, rather than having a third after easter, still called 2nd)
So i was wondering are colleges/unis there same term/semester dates as school and if so:
Can you give me a rough idea of when college starts after xmas and finishes for summer?
Also, I've narrowed down my choices to Sacramento State, California and University of South Florida, Tampa.
I've been to fl but never california, so does any one know what Sacramento is like at all? When someone says cali i think of beaches... but on google maps it doesnt look that close to the beach...
So yeah any info AT ALL would be amazing thanks :) on american uni in general (from movies it seems a bit different to english ones), the places or these specific ones.
i like california wayyy better than florida because in florida during the next season (spring to summer) almost anyone after hours can be found in a bikini, it's just kind of annoying. i love love love cali and i highly recommend it because it's equal in partying and education whereas florida you just kind of party.. literally like all of the schools there are major party schools. and california though like where you don't live there isn't a beach and you do have to maybe drive a little to get to one but they're fabulous :) there is sun everywhere and the people are really nice and there is more stuff to do there...
and this year a lot of colleges started january 15th and they get out like maybe first or second week of may
one of my guy friends is from granite bay, which is right outside sacramento. from what he said, it's not really a beach-y kind of place since it's in norcal, but it is pretty hot, climate-wise. if you want, i can ask him a bit more about specifics :)
as for a time frame, i have some friends who went back to school two weeks ago, but my bff doesn't go back until this coming sunday. and in the spring, it's generally done in early may.
like rach said, it's in norcal so it's less warm and not beachhy. if you really want somewhere close to the beachh you have more options in socal but there are some beach colleges in san francisco.
Like Starry said, FL schools tend to be party school although I'm not sure about USF specifically. I've never been to Cali but I wan't to go badly and my sis who lives there loves it. But yeah Sacramento is not really beachy since it's norcal. Tampa is pretty nice, though. You've got really nice beaches and a lot of concerts go on out there.
Parties and bikinis star?! Sounds perfect haha but yeah i do care about actually working too, i'd like a good job at the end of this so i want to do well.
There arent many uni's to choose from, i cant just pick random ones in a state i'd like as they have to be in partner with my uni. So out of the ones that did my course and were in a state i wanted to go to, there was only these. Like i couldnt go to a different one in cali, if that makes sense?
I dont think the less warm bit would really matter as im sure it's warmer than where i live. I think... whats the usual winter/summer temp in sacramento? I guess living on an island i dont really need it to be beachy... but if its nice weather i guess it's good to be near a beach!
i've been looking at the websites - looks way confusing... but the fl one has a good course by the looks of it the sacramento one is more on the confusing side....
thanks for all the comments guys, keep them coming i'm talking about my choices this weekend with my parents :)
go to socal. beachess galore. all florida schools party harddd. and nothing else. schools usually start back up again after winter break around the middle of january
Rach thanks, so deff a lot warmer than here! We'd get max 25C which is think is about 77F according to the online converter... and that's very rare to get that temp.
mmm California weather is so perfect. Haven't checked out many schools there, which seems fine since most people know about them but the weather is amaaaaaaaazing. No humidity.. ever :)
and yeah in sacramento you probably have to drive a little out of your way to get to a beach
but tampa is a major hot spot like brittany said there are a lot of beaches and concerts :) and like everyone goes down to florida for spring break soo ;)
yeah i hate the weather here :( it's just boring in the middle... like snow is so rare too. And it'll only be not even half an inch when we get it. This year and last year we got snow (tiny amount, like my end of the island didnt even get it) and that was like first time except one other time we'd had it since i was alive.
The sea breeze makes it cooler in the summer but then warmer in the winter so its never interesting weather :/
Ahhh i'm so excited about this semester abroad. I dont know how i'll chose... but really it's not up to me. I dont know how it works but depending on how many people want to go away i may not get my first choice. Or even get to go at all.... but ive been told most people get to go if they want. So i'm hopeful.
That's exactly like my parents. I want to go to California or Florida because I absolutely love warm weather and beaches. And I like to party (Yes, I'd go to Florida just because they party but I have a feeling I'll get tired of it after my Freshman year). But I wouldn't know anyone, at all. If I was to stay in state, someone from my high school is bound to be going to the same college (not to mention lower cost). But I sometimes don't know if three or four hours will be far enough from home, for me.

You're not quite there, you're not on my level. Trust me, for you I'm trouble.
Yeah i'm worried about fees. How much are those colleges i said do you guys know? Or just uni in general? I know you've talked about private ones but i wouldnt know the difference...
And Paige - thats exactly why i've chosen California or Florida :) My mum already misses me massives being in england like a plane and then train ride away.... i wonder how she'll react when i'm 8 or 9 hours away by plane!!
yeah, i want to get away. the only place my parents would like is vermont, but it's SO COLD up there. and it's too close. three/four hours. maryland/DC area is a good six/seven hours. and i could take the train home instead of flying.
i'm for sure staying in socal. my parents don't care where i go as long as i'm happy about my choice lol xD the one that i think i'll do better and be able to go to a decent medical school is wayyyy too close. about 30 mins away taking the freeway. i want to be far away enough to dorm, but stay in ca.
i think my parents for the most part be okay with me going away. but then again my brothers did and they've set a really bad example, my parents dont think they turned out okay and want them to come back so ill most likely not be too far away however i think we might move to cali or texas so one of those :) i wanna stay away from the north.. don't like cold weather whatsoever
but uhm, paige, you will most definitely get tired of the partying after freshman year because my brothers were like they did everything they could with parties and now the ideal thing they do is just chill with the friends you make.
yeaaah I wish I wanted to go to school far away. I wanna get away from my mom so badly, but I wanna be on the East Coast so oh well ahhaha I cannnot wait for college though!
You guys are lucky you have so much choice. There isnt one single uni where i live! Like in the whole country! (if it can be called a county, its an island i guess...) so obviously england was the only choice really. And even then i wanted to stay south - despite it snowing there right now.
I'm half way through my first year - deff not sick of partying yet!! But we'll see by summer :P
