Chapter Six.

Abram yawned as he turned on the van and backed slowly out of the driveway, trying not to hit anything.  He had left his cigarettes at home.  He wanted to do the right thing for once and quit.  He sped down the road towards Sam’s house, who he would be picking up first.  He did a mental check to see if he had everything. Guitar, check. Six cases of beer that his brother had bought him, check. Ping pong balls, check. A few clean t-shirts, check.  Abram was set.  This was going to be the best trip ever.  He honked as he pulled into Sam’s driveway.  He really had a need for a cigarette, but he steadied himself.  Instead he took a sip of his black coffee.  Maybe that would take the edge off.  He watched as Sam clumsily opened the door and hobbled down his stone walkway.  He obviously had just woken up.  Abram got out of the car and helped him put his stuff in the back.

“Just woke up, princess?” Abram asked, laughing.

“Shut up, man.  Alyssa called me crying at like two am.  So I had to listen to that bullshiit for an hour.  So ready to forget her.” Sam said, rolling his eyes.

“Chicks, man.” Abram said with a smile.  He climbed back into the driver’s side, and started to back out of Sam’s driveway, not even bothering to check is Sam was buckled.

“Where to next, kind sir?” Sam asked, fiddling with the radio dial.

“Ana’s.  Then Jake’s.  Kaylen’s not coming.  Something about Markus.  So Ana called me last night and said that she’s bringing Callie.  I don’t really know her but I heard she’s cool.”

“And a slut.  Don’t forget about that.”  Sam said, finally settling on an old Tom Petty song.  He had heard all the stories about what Callie Everett had done on prom night.

“She’s hot, Sam, so I don’t really give a fuuck.” Abram said, turning into Ana’s expansive driveway.  He honked the horn and waited for her to come out.  Ana and Callie emerged at the same time, both dragging an extensive amount of suitcases with them.  Abram got out of the driver’s side once again, opening the back doors.

“Hey, Abram,” Callie said, pulling her sunglasses over her tired hazel eyes.

“Fun night last night?” Abram said, obviously alluring that she was hungover.

“Yes.  I had to pick her drunk ass up from Erik’s at three am.” Ana said, annoyed, shoving her suitcases in the back and finding a seat in the van.

“Shut up, Willis,” Callie called after her, tying her strawberry blonde hair back in a low bun.  She fixed the waist of her Hollister sundress and joined Ana in the back.

“We just have to pick up Jake and then we’re on our way,” Abram said with a yawn, finishing what was left of his coffee.  He could see out of his rearview window that Ana smiled at that last comment.  He sensed that something had happened.

“Excited about that Ana?” Abram asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Well Jake is my friend, Abe.” Ana said, completely avoiding the question.

Abram simply rolled his eyes, he knew something was up.  It was like he had a sixth sense or something.  He smiled to himself as he turned the radio up.  He didn’t bother honking the horn when they pulled into Jake’s driveway.  He simply did not care that much for the kid.  Ever since he had stolen his Pikachu card in the second grade, he knew he was shady.

Jake walked down his front steps with his duffle bag poised over his shoulder, beach chairs and his lacrosse stick in the other hand.  Abram rolled his eyes.  Of course ‘The Ultimate LAX bro’ would bring his lacrosse stick with him to Nantucket.  He flinched as Callie appeared out of nowhere over his shoulder.

“Yes?” Abram asked, scratching his stubble on his cheeks.

“I need to change this music,” she said, with a wink, popping a mixed CD into the disc player.  The sounds of Ke$ha’s single Tik Tok blared through the speakers.  Ana and Callie mouthed the words in the backseat.  Jake opened the back door, and sat down next to Ana.

“Let’s go, Abe,” He said, answering a text on his phone.

Abram let out a sigh as he pulled out of his driveway.  In ten minutes, they would be on the highway and off to their own little piece of heaven for three weeks.

Chapter Seven.

Callie yawned as Abram pulled into the driveway of Ana’s beach house.  It was beautiful, with the ocean waves crashing in the background, but she was too tired to care.  She didn’t even mind that she had been asleep through the whole ferry ride, her favorite part.  She stretched her arms and rested her head on Ana’s shoulder.  She knew that she wasn’t very happy with her after her three am drunken distress call, but they we’re best friends.  She’d get over it.

She watched as Abram got out of the van and opened up the back doors so everyone could get their stuff.  He was kind of hot in a tortured soul kind of way.  And she had always had a soft spot for those kinds of boys, even though her roster of boys senior year had ranged from clean-cut captain of the debate team, to grungy, liberal hippie, 21 year old that went to the local art school.  So maybe she had no particular type, but Abram seemed to fit her standards at the moment.  She let out a yawn as she jumped out of the backseat door and made her way up to the front entrance of the house.  She breathed in the salty air and was immediately at peace.

“Which room do ya want, best friend?” Callie asked Ana, who was dragging her suitcase up the stairs.

“Let’s take the one with the two full-sized beds.  The boys can fight over the one with the futon and twin beds.” Ana replied, plopping her suitcase on one of the beds.

“I like the way you think” Callie said, laying down on the bed by the window. “So, what’s new with you and Jake?  You looked pretty chummy on the way down.” She said, taking off her sandals.

“Nothing is going on.  You know that I hate relationships,” Ana said, taking off her USC sweatshirt.

“Amen, sistah.  I’m going to take a nap.  I think I still have excessive amounts of Vodka in my system.  Is your crazy friend Lexie coming over tonight?” Callie asked, yawning.

“Most likely.  After she gets off from work.” Ana replied, leaving.  She shut the door behind her.

Callie lay her head back on the pillows and drifted off to sleep. About three hours later, she woke up and went downstairs.  Everyone had left, except for Abram.  It was their chance to finally be alone.

“Hey, sleepyhead,” Abram said with his signature crooked smile.

Callie laughed as she opened the fridge and grabbed an Arnold Palmer.  She sat down on the couch and asked, “Where are mi amigos?”

“They went to go buy food, I guess.” Abram answered, feverishly tapping his fingers on the granite countertops.

“Something wrong?” Callie asked, taking her hair out of her elastic.

“Trying to quit smoking.  I didn’t bring any cigarettes with me and now I’m going crazy.” He said, sitting down next to her.

Callie simply frowned as she got up to throw her can away.  She sat back down next to his and said, “Want to go to the beach?  It is right outside,” Callie said, yawning.

“I guess,” Abram said.

Callie smiled as she made her way upstairs.  She put on her tribal print bikini and her oversized Arizona State t-shirt, where she would be attending next year.  She grabbed her oversized sunglasses and padded downstairs, to wait for Abram.  He emerged from his room, wearing swim trunks and his sleeveless ripped Connecticut Huskies t-shirt.  Callie grabbed her portable Ipod speakers from her purse and followed Abram down to the beach, two beers in his hand.  The waves were nice, but the water was freezing.  Callie slipped her shirt off of her body and sat down on her towel, feeling the warm sun on her skin.

“So, where are you going for school next year?” Callie asked, pushing her sunglasses up her freckled nose.  She pushed play on her Ipod and 311’s Amber started to play through the speakers.

“Not going.  Pursuing the open road with the band.”  Abram said, looking down at her.  Callie smiled.  Right.  He was in a band.  This made him even more attractive in her eyes.

“Well you should come visit me at ASU sometime.  We can party down.”  She said, reaching over him for a Miller Lite.  She opened it up and let the cold liquid seep down her throat.

“That can be done.  I’m sure you know how to party,” He said, taking a sip of his beer, alluring to Callie’s party girl reputation.

“That’s what the legends say,” Callie said with a giggle, tracing lines in the warm sand.  She really wanted to lean over and kiss him, but she would wait until later.  Until she was sure that he would be into it.  The song changed to Glee’s ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’.  Callie blushed and quickly changed it to the next song.

“Sorry about that, I’m a closeted musical freak.”

“It’s okay, I think it’s cute.” Abram said with a laugh, finishing his drink.

Callie blushed again and sat up and leaned towards him, “You’re the only guy that thinks so.  My ex-boyfriend found my RENT soundtrack, and I never lived that one down.” She said, rolling her green eyes.  Then Abram pushed a piece of wavy hair away from her eyes, and laid down on his towel, looking up at the sky.  Callie did the same and they observed clouds for the rest of the afternoon.

***

Sam hummed the Cab’s Bounce as he pushed the small grocery cart around the tiny Stop & Shop.  He grabbed a few boxes of Lucky Charms and Cocoa Puffs, and watched Ana’s look of disgust as he laid them in the cart.

“How can you eat that?” She asked, playfully jabbing him in the stomach.

“How can you eat THAT?” Sam said in reply, gesturing to the organic rice crackers that she had put in the cart.

Ana simply rolled her eyes and dragged him along the produce section.  Jake hadn’t come with them because he needed to do some pre-season workout for soccer at SDSU.  This was good, because it would’ve been awkward grocery shopping with two boys that she had once hooked up with.  It would have been like a really bad movie, with a train wreck ending.

“So can you tell me what happened between you and Alyssa?” Ana asked, putting a few grapefruits in a bag and tossing them in the cart.

Sam let out a sharp sigh and started to tell the story, “So I went over her house, and as soon as she opens the door, I can tell something is up.  I can hear that John Mayer CD that I bought her playing upstairs, which she never listens too.  And, all of a sudden, she just jumps me.  It all went downhill from there.”

“That sounds horrible.  I would’ve sprinted out of there.” Ana said, laughing at Sam’s expense.

“I kind of did.  And she was pissed.  Awesome way to start the summer, right?” Sam said, pushing the cart over towards the checkout line.

Ana nodded and handed the cashier the credit card that her parents had given her for the trip.  She punched her pin number in, and grabbed the receipt.  She and Sam grabbed the bags and made their way over to the van.  They loaded all of the food into the back, got into the van, and then drove away.  Ana laid her head back on the head rest as she breathed in the fresh ocean air.  She could tell that Sam was watching her out of the corner of his eye so she sat up.  She could feel an awkward atmosphere between them.  All of a sudden she saw Jake out of the corner of her eye, sprinting up the sidewalk.

“Pull over,” she said to Sam.  She didn’t give him a reason, but she knew he would anyway.

She yelled out the window, “Get in lard-a;ss.”  Jake smiled as he stopped running and took his earphones out.  He wiped the sweat off of his forhead and climbed into the back seat.

“Have a nice run?” Ana asked, turning around to talk to him.

Jake simply shrugged his shoulders and said, “The usual seven miles of hell.”

Ana nodded and settled her head back on the head rest.  See, it wasn’t that awkward having two guys that she was kind of in love with in the same place.  Oh, if only she knew.

Chapter Eight.

Jake looked awkwardly around the van as Sam was driving back to the house.  He started to hum along to the Dave Matthews song on the radio.  He decided to break the awkward silence and said, “So what are we doing tonight?”

“I don’t know yet.  My friend Lexie is coming over after work, with some of her other friends.  So I guess just a low-key party.” Ana said with a small grin, looking back at him.  Even with no makeup on, her striking blue eyes still glittered in the sunlight.

Sam executed a poor turn as he barreled into the driveway.  He aggressively slammed on the brake as he put the car in park and turned it off.  He opened the door and opened up the back, taking some of the groceries out.  Jake and Ana followed him, walking quietly up towards the house.  What was he so angry about? Jake though, a perplexed look on his face.

They walked in to an empty house.  Where had Abram and Called gone?  Jake sighed as he took the milk out of the paper bag and put it in the fridge.  He accidentally bumped into Ana as he closed the door.

“Sorry,” he said, laughing.  “I didn’t mean to hurt you if I did.” He added with a sarcastic wink.

“Oh, please,” Ana said, poking him in the ribs with her long index finger.

“I call the shower first, since I smell.” Jake said, cutting her off and racing upstairs.  He had to get ready for tonight.  A small party, he knew, wasn’t in Ana’s vocabulary.  He still remembered her blowout junior year, when he had hooked up with three girls, and gotten so drunk that he woke up in his car with a mustache drawn on the side of his face.

___

“What should I wear?” Callie whined, looking at the various sundresses and shorts laid out on her bed.

“Nothing, go nakey,” Ana joked, straightening her hair.  She was in a good mood lately, it must be the summer season working its magic.

“You’re a big help”, Callie said, slipping on a floral strapless sundress from Urban Outfitters.

“What can I say, I should be a personal stylist,” Ana said with a giggle, finishing her eyeliner and buttoning her white shorts, reaching for her striped racer back tank top with the crochet detailing.

“I think I might like Abram,” Callie blurted, immediately turning red.

“No.  I do not approve.  He’s like the male equivalent of you.  Absolutely not.”  Ana said, for a brief moment snapping back to her old self.

“And that’s a bad thing?” Callie asked, looking for her gladiator sandals.

Ana simply rolled her eyes and tugged at her bangs.  She had seen it all before, girls that felt like they needed men.  And Callie was one of them.  She didn’t remember the last time that she was single.  It had all started freshmen year with that one boy that had truly broken Callie’s heart.  Jay Sorrento.  He had verbally abused her, left her alone at homecoming.  Of course, Ana had to pick up the pieces.  She always had to when her friends fell apart.  She was the only one that could keep it together under pressing situations.  No one had seen her cry since fourth grade, and she intended to keep it that way.

“He uses girls.  That’s why he’s a musician.  He likes groupies.  It’s Jay all over again.” Ana replied, rolling her eyes.

Callie let out a sharp sigh, finished buckling her shoes and fled the room.  Ana simply rolled her eyes again, she really hated petty drama.  That’s why she was looking to have fun tonight, with someone she didn’t know.

___

“I need to find a new girl tonight, man.” Sam said, buttoning the last hole on his plaid shirt.

“What about Ana?  You’ve loved her forever,” Abram said, shaking his head.

“She and Donahue are probably going to get it on soon,” Sam said, groaning and falling back on his twin bed.

“I hate that kid.  Golden boy.  Please.  Girls like guys with a little bit of an edge.  Like us.” Abram said with a wink, plucking the strings on his guitar.

“You know, playing the guitar won’t get you everywhere with girls like it normally does.” Sam said, running his fingers through his hair.

Are you frickin’ kidding me?  You don’t think that every girl out there doesn’t want a song written about them?  Give me one good example.”

Sam rolled his eyes as he buckled his belt.  Sometimes he didn’t know why he and Abram were friends.

“Exactly, you can’t give me any.  So you better start serenading some girl with ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’, or else you aren’t getting any as;s.” Abram said, starting to play the John Mayer favorite.

Sam stayed silent as he kicked at the corner of his bed.  He really needed to forget about Ana, since she had clearly moved on.  Well, she never had anything to move on from.  But in the back of his mind, he liked to think that she was secretly in love with him, that they would have some uber romantic moment like in the Notebook; Alyssa’s favorite movie.  That movie that she had made him watch five times in a row.  Ugh.  Why did everything always come back to her?  He wanted to forget her, not be constantly reminded of her.
