And I'll be here by the ocean
Just waiting for proof that there's
Sunsets and silhouette dreams
All my sand castles fall
Like the ashes of cigarettes
And every waves drags me to sea
I could stand here for hours
Just to ask God the question
Is everyone here make-believe?

It's summer 2010, and six friends are coming together once more in Anastasia's beach house in Nantucket before going their seperate ways and leaving for college.

They come from all different backgrounds and messed up families, but they have one thing in common: they're all searching for something to believe in.

Chapter One.

Anastasia Willis yawned deeply as she turned over in her queen sized bed and checked the clock.  It was 9:30 in the morning, time to wake up.  She had to start packing for Nantucket, and her three suitcases weren’t going to pack themselves.  She tied her blonde curls back into a low bun as she got out of bed, stretching her long arms.  As she turned on her Iphone she noticed that she had three new text messages, all from Kaylen.  She was freaking out that Markus had cheated on her again because he didn’t want to sleep over her house last night.  Sometimes Ana hated her overdramatic friends.  Ana shook her head as she pulled one of her empty suitcases out of her closet.  She started piling in all of her essentials such as underwear, bathing suits, and sweatshirts for those cold nights.  Her fingers glided over the stitched logo of her USC sweatshirt.  It was where she would be attending in the fall, and she was beyond excited.  To get out of the boroughs of Connecticut and start living a new life.  Her own.

Why don't you tell him that "I'm leavin'"
Never lookin' back again
You found somebody who does it better than he can
No more making you cry
No more them gray skies
Girl we be flying on the G5, G5

Ana was interrupted by the sound of her phone ringing; it was probably a call from Kaylen.  She didn’t want to answer it, but she had a feeling that she had to.

“Hello,” Ana said, drumming her fingers on her bureau.

“Hi, A, I was just wondering if you got my texts.  Sleazy boyfriend alert.”

“Yeah, I did.  And how can you assume Markus is cheating on you?”

“He didn’t want to come over last night after we hung out at Erik’s.  So he probably went to go hook up with some skank from his work.  And I want to hang out with him before he goes to FSU, since he can’t go to Nantucket because of his stupid job” Kaylen answered, obviously wanting Ana to pity her.

Honestly, Ana had heard it all before.  Girl with low self-esteem meets boy who just wants to have a good time and hook up.  Everyone thinks that they’re the golden couple in high school, but really boy cheats on girl every weekend with underclassmen skanks.  Girl thinks they’re going to be together forever after high school, but boy would rather go to a party school in some place warm like, perhaps, Florida, and leave girl all alone at some state school a half hour from home.  This was why she never got involved with anyone, besides Jake Donahue, junior year.  They had the perfect relationship.  He’d come over on Friday nights to Ana’s always empty house, they’d hook up for about an hour, watch TV, then he’d leave.  This went on for about six months, then he decided that he wanted something real.  So she broke it off with him.  It was easy, clean.  They even went to senior prom together, but just as friends of course.

“Ana.  Are you listening to me?” Kaylen whined.

“Of course I am, hon.  Just got distracted,” Ana replied, putting some t-shirts into an empty suitcase.

“It’s just so hard being in love.  Too bad you’ve never experienced it.  Then you could help me.”

Ana rolled her eyes and said,”Kaylen.   I really have to go.  See you tomorrow morning.  Abram’s picking us all up in the van at ten so we can be on the beach by at least one.  Bye.”  And with that last statement, Ana hung up.  Sometimes she couldn’t stand Kaylen’s behavior.  Ana was just not a people person.  She pulled on a USC soccer t-shirt (she would be playing there next year) over a bikini top as she made her way over to her bathroom.  She pulled on a pair of Soffee shorts and turned on the bathroom light.  Her dark circles under her green eyes were getting larger, due to the general lack of sleep and too much Miller Light.  She hated the taste of alcohol but it allowed her to escape from her already messy life.  She hated the fact that her parents always left her in the house alone, and didn’t really care what she did with her life.  They were only there to pay for college and other expenses it seemed.   To dole out money rather than wisdom and compassion.  Sometimes she felt that she was more mature than them.

She sighed once again as she put her aviators on, grabbed her purse, and walked out the door towards her new Honda Civic.  It was a graduation present, but it seemed like her parents were once again trying to buy her love.  Newsflash; it wasn’t working.  She put her left directional on as she pulled out of her driveway, speeding on down the road towards the local lake.  She was meeting her best friend Sam there for a picnic, to celebrate his eighteenth.  They had been friends since before they could walk and going to the lake on his birthday had always been their tradition.

Chapter Two.

Sam Ellington pulled slowly into the Lake Mohegan parking lot with Jack Johnson blaring through the speakers and parked his Ford Explorer into the closest spot by the sand.  As soon as he shut the car off he saw Ana pull in right beside him, looking pissed off in her new Civic.  He wouldn’t be that mad if his parents had decided to buy him a new car.  Sam pulled the keys out of the ignition and got out of the car, the door inches away from scratching Ana’s passenger door.  He smiled as he walked over to the driver’s side, banging on the windows.  He watched Ana’s expression as she slowly took off her aviators and put them on top of her head.  She then opened up the door quickly, jamming Sam in the stomach.

“Watch it, Willis.” Sam said jokingly, giving her a death stare.

“Well move your fat ass away from my car.” Ana replied with a smile.

Ana then popped the trunk open to get her bag and towel.  She pulled something wrapped out of her bag and handed it to Sam.

“Happy birthday, biitch.  You can finally drink in Montreal and most foreign countries.” She said, pushing her platinum blonde bangs out of her eyes.

“Why, thank you, Anastasia.  To what do I owe this pleasure.” Sam said, enveloping her in a big bear hug.

He could feel Ana cringe under his embrace, but he secretly knew that she loved affection, since that one time sophomore year when they were both drunk and hooked up in Sam’s living room.  She said it had been something that she would regret for the rest of her life, but Sam was secretly in love with her.  Ever since fifth grade when she had traded her chocolate chip cookies for his carrot sticks, he had fallen hard.

“Let’s go to the beach,” Ana finally said awkwardly, pulling away.

“You are so awkward Ana.  I wonder if they’ll appreciate your awkwardness in SoCal.” Sam said, getting the cooler and his towels out of his car.

“Well at least I’m going somewhere out of the state, Mr-I-think-I’m –going-to-make-it-in-the-music-business-since-I’m-so-frickin-good-at-guitar.” Ana said mockingly, poking him in the side.

“At least I’m good at something besides kicking a ball and mowing girls down,” Sam said, alluring to the many girls on the soccer field that Ana had shoved, tripped, and given nosebleeds to.

“Very funny.  Unwrap your present!” Ana said, taking off her t-shirt and sitting down in the sand on her towel.  She took her hair out of her bun and let it fall around her shoulders.

Sam sighed as he sat down next to her.  He began to tear at the wrapping paper and found a rectangular box.  He opened it to find a picture frame with a picture of him and Ana in the fall, after one of his football games.  She was wearing his away jersey and he was wearing his uniform and had his arm around her shoulders.  She was smiling, really smiling, which she never did anymore, and Sam was making a goofy face, which he always did.  It was one of his favorite pictures of them.  He tried to fight the tears that were forming in his eyes.  He was truly going to miss her when she went to school in California.

“So you can remember me when you’re a big rock star.” Ana said with a smile.

“Thanks, A.  I love it.  And trust me, I’ll never forget you.” Sam replied, putting it back in the box and taking an Arnold Palmer out of the cooler.  He offered one to Ana, but she said no.  Her coach at USC had her on a strict, no sugar diet so she would be ready for preseason.

“So, you excited for Nantucket?” Ana asked, taking a swig from her Nalgene water bottle.

“I suppose, it’s good to see everyone.  Minus Kaylen.  Her and Deusche bag Markus on the rocks again?”

“Sadly, yes.  What will the world come to now.” Ana said sarcastically.

“I know I won’t be able to sleep at night.” Sam replied dramatically, laying his head back down onto his towel.

“It’s just so ridiculous; sometimes I don’t even know why I’m friends with her.  I mean it’s obvious that he’s cheating on her.”

“Maybe he’s not.  Markus and I had a heart-to-heart once.  It was magical,” Sam said, taking his wayfarers off to reveal his piercing grey eyes.

Ana laughed, turning onto her stomach.  “It’s guy love between two guys…” Ana sang, quoting the song from Scrubs.

Sam laughed and shook his mop of dark brown hair, “We’re closer than the average man and wife, that’s why our matching bracelets say Turk and JD…”

“Okay, that’s enough Samuel.  What’s the time?” Ana asked, putting her aviators back on.

“Three-thirty.  Why?  Somewhere to be?”

“Yeah, actually.  My parents want me to have dinner with them tonight at the Yacht Club.  Probably something about the beach house. “

“ ‘Now, dear, don’t drink all the good booze, you know Daddy likes it.  There’s Bud Light in the refrigerator downstairs.  And for God sakes, no shoes in the house.  I do not want Maritza finding all this sand when she cleans the house after your cretins that you call friends leave.  Please, do not use the good China.’” Sam said in a perfect imitation of Ana’s mother, Daphne.  She was always a stickler for cleanliness, but did not care if the kids drank.

Sam laughed silently to himself as he felt his phone vibrate in the pocket of his Hurley swim trunks.  It was from his girlfriend, Alyssa. Also known as the most annoying person ever, whom Ana had let come to Nantucket because she thought that Sam actually liked her.  Why hadn’t he broken up with her yet?

From Alyssa; Hey, birthday boy.  Where are you?  You should come over and help me pack.  I have a surprise for you.

Sam sighed as he composed a new message.

To Alyssa; At the lake with Ana.  I’ll be over soon.  What’s the surprise?

“Sexting?” Ana asked with a grin, looking up at him.

“Nah, brah.  Gotta go help my lady pack.”  Sam said reluctantly, running his hands through his hair.

Suddenly he felt his phone vibrate.  He opened it and was greeted with a reply.

From Alyssa; Come over now.  I need you ;)  Shh, the surprise is a secret.

“I should get going too.  Rents expect me at five.” Ana said, putting her shirt back on and packing up her bag.

“It was nice hanging with you.” Sam said, putting his beat-up Metallica shirt back on and throwing his Arnold Palmer can back in the recycling.

Ana simply waved as she put her belongings in the trunk and pulled out of the parking lot.  She mouthed a quick ‘Save Me’ as she and Sam went their separate ways, each into their own versions of hell.

Chapter Three

Alyssa Montego stood in front of her vanity mirror, brushing her perfect brown hair.  Her boyfriend Sam was coming over soon and she had an extra special birthday present for him.  Her virginity.  She was in love with Sam, and she felt him slowly slipping away from her.  So what better option did she have except to lure him in with her body?  She smiled to herself as she walked over towards her I-home to turn on some music.  Soft John Mayer played through the speakers, which Sam would love since he always wanted to play the guitar like John Mayer.  Everything was perfect.  Suddenly, Alyssa heard her doorbell ring.  It had to be Sam.  She took one last look in her mirror, took a deep breath, and slowly made her way downstairs.  She could see Sam standing outside in his gross Metallica t-shirt and bright, mismatching swim trunks, but that made her want him even more.  Something about fixing a scruffy boy up excited her.

“Hey, babe,” Alyssa said, opening the door.

“Hi.” Sam replied stoically, leaning in for a quick kiss.

“Happy birthday!” She said, excitedly, taking his hand and leading him upstairs.

“So, what’s my present?  Is that John Mayer coming from your room?  I never knew you liked him.” Sam said, taking off his wayfarers and hooking them onto his shirt.

“I like to surprise people,” Alyssa said, carefully opening the door to her room.  She was instantly overwhelmed by the scented candles that she had bought from the body shop, and she could feel Sam’s grip slowly pulling away.

“Um, Alyssa, what is this all about?  Are you trying to seduce me, Ms. Montego,” Sam said in a joking matter.

Alyssa simply rolled her eyes and gave him a soft kiss on the lips.  He kissed her back reluctantly, resting his hands on the small of her back.  She clumsily led him over to her bed, tripping over the various flip flops and magazines.  She was now under his heavy, warm body, running her fingers through his hair.  He then began to kiss her neck as she inched his shirt off of his skinny body.  Alyssa began to untie the strings of his swim trunks when Sam quickly pulled away.

“Whoa, Alyssa.  What are you doing?” Sam said, scratching his head.

“Giving you your birthday present, hon,” Alyssa answered, confused.

“But, I, I’m not ready,” Sam said, sitting down on her bed.

“Don’t bullshiit me Sam, I know that you aren’t a virgin.  I thought I was giving you what you wanted…” Alyssa said, tears beginning to form in her eyes.

“It’s not you, Al, you’re beautiful.  It’s just, our relationship hasn’t been the best lately.  I keep feeling that I’m overcompensating for everything, to try to make me feel that I like you.”

“Ar-are you in love with someone else?” Alyssa said.  Shiit.  She was really crying now.

She could hear Sam swallow heavily.  Alyssa knew what the answer was.  Yes, he was.  But who?  The possibilities flashed through her mind until only one girl came to mind.  Anastasia Willis.  She had known it all along.  She saw the way he looked at her.  Like she was the only girl in the world that could make him happy.  She sniffled as she sat up against her headboard, wiping the running mascara from her cheeks.  Sam was still silent, gathering his belongings. John Mayer’s Heartbreak Warfare played through the speakers.

“Well have fun in Nantucket by yourself.  Because I really don’t want to see you fawning all over Ana.  I owe myself that much for putting up with your shiit for almost six months.  Have a nice life.”

“Al, it doesn’t have to be like this.  You can still come to the beach house with us.  Ana invited you.  Don’t disrespect her by backing out last minute.”

“Fuuck you Samuel Ellington.  Get out of my house.  And don’t call me Al.  I hate that.” Alyssa said, opening up her bedroom door.

Sam let out a big sigh, put his Wayfarers over his eyes and walked out of the door and down the stairs, just like that.  Just like that he was gone.  And all Alyssa had left was this stupid John Mayer CD.  And she didn’t even like him.

Clouds of sulfur in the air
Bombs are falling everywhere
It's heartbreak warfare
Once you want it to begin
No one really ever wins
In heartbreak warfare

Chapter Four.

Abram Jacobson sat on his front porch swing slowly plucking his guitar strings.  He normally didn’t play his guitar that often in his band, he preferred to sing.  Guitar was just his way of relaxing, an escape from everyday life.  And from the constant harping from his father to go to college and get a good job that sucked the life out of him, rather than doing what he loved.  It’s not like his band, Motivated Avenue, sucked.  They actually got quite a few local gigs and were set to tour the country with a few other local bands this fall.  But still, it was never good enough for his father.  At least with his mother being gone, his sister still supported him.  He suddenly heard his phone vibrate.  Sam was calling him.  About what?

“Ay, man.” Abram answered, putting his guitar down.

“What the fuuck is wrong with girls?  I mean seriously, they act all cool and nice when you first meet them, but then, when they don’t think that you like them anymore, they try to lure you in with their sexuality.  And fuucking John Mayer.” Sam said almost breathlessly into the phone.  Abram had no idea what was going on.

“Whoa.  Trouble in paradise?  And why are you bringing John Mayer into this?”

“Alyssa.  So I go over her house after I was at the lake with Ana, and there’s John Mayer drifiting through her speakers, and she smells nice and looks really good.  Like really good.  She takes my hand, brings me to her room, starts kissing me, etcetera.  She normally doesn’t do things like that.  So I tell her to slow down, because I really don’t think she’s ready.  And then she goes on this rant about how I’m in love with Ana, I don’t love her, blah, blah, blah…”

“So did you guys break up?” Abram asked, lighting a cigarette.  He knew he shouldn’t smoke,  but it felt so good.

“I guess.  She’s not going to Nantucket now, so…”

“Wow.  This is turning into a bro trip.  You, me, and Jake.  And now it’s just Ana and Kaylen.  I feel bad for Ana.”

“I think Ana’s friend, Lexie might show up.  She lives down there so we can chill with a local.” Sam said with a laugh.

“Sounds good to me.  Oh, and when do we get back?  We should hold band practice before tour.”  Abram replied, blowing a puff of smoke out into the air.

“Early/Mid august.  I don’t really know exactly when.  Yeah, but I wish Jeff, Rae, and Danny could come.  But they are the only ones with jobs.” Sam said, laughing.

Yeah, they’re kind of the reason that we could afford a van and a trailer.  But Rae’s still my biitch,” Abram said, referring to the five foot nine, lanky drummer.

“Bye, Abe, I gotta go pack and ****.  See ya tomorrow in the morning with Big Bertha,” Sam said, referring to the Chevy van that they had just purchased from the local used car dealership.

“See ya.” Abram said, hanging up the phone and putting out his cigarette.  He picked up his guitar again and picked up right where he left off.

****

Jake Donahue yawned as he sat at the towel cabana at the Union Country Club.  He hated his job, but he needed to find some way to pay for the pre-med program at San Diego State.  He was suddenly awoken by the sound of someone’s fingers rapping on the wooden counter.  He quickly gave the family four towels and sat back down.  Only a few more hours.  Suddenly he saw a blonde walking towards the Grill.  It was Ana.

“Ana!” Jake yelled, waving his arms.

“Hey, Jake!” Ana said, walking towards the cabana.  She looked beautiful in an eyelet strapless sun dress and light blue cardigan.

“What are you doing here?” He asked, inviting her into his ‘lair’.

“Dinner with Daphne and Jonathan.  Good times,” Ana said, propping herself up on the counter.

“I bet.  You excited for Nantucket?  Nice bruise” Jake asked, tracing the outline on her knee.

“Yeah, I am, actually.  But immediately after I have to go up to USC for preseason.  Hell.” Ana said with a grimace.

“That’s rough, but I’m sure that you’ll do great.  I believe in you.” Jake said with a smile, sitting down next to her.

“Oh , thanks Dad.” Ana said with an eye roll, punching him gently in the shoulder.

Jake laughed and looked into her green eyes.  He used to be in love with her, when they were hooking up.  That ship had passed long ago.  But that didn’t mean that he couldn’t want to hook up with her again.

“It’s five.  I have to go endure an hour of lecturing about the house.  When do you get off?  We should hang out.  Just like old times.” Ana said, pushing the blonde hair out of his blue eyes.  She kissed him on the cheek and walked off towards the restaurant.  Jake sat back down in his chair and closed his eyes, drifting into his perfect dream world.

Chapter Five.

Ana sat stoically in the chair of the Grill, looking at her mother fixing her ugly coral lipstick out of the corner of her eye.  She heard her phone ring in her bag, but she didn’t answer it.  It was probably Kaylen, complaining about her problems.  And she couldn’t answer her phone anyway at the dinner table, without enduring a twenty minute lecture from her father about how technology was slowly ruining the planet, destructing family values, etcetera.  She couldn’t wait to go to California to get away from all of their nonsense.

“Anastasia, are you all packed?” Her mother Daphne said, trying to make conversation as Ana picked at her dry salad.  She simply nodded her head and took a sip of her club soda.

“That’s good.  What time is that Jacobson boy picking you up?” Daphne asked, sipping her martini.  Which was more like lighter fluid with some olives stuck in it.

“Ten o’clock.” Ana answered, staring off at the cute bus boy seating her dad’s arch nemesis Peter Baker and his girlfriend of the week.

“Shiit, Daphne, Peter’s here.  Pretend like we’re having fun, ok?  He’s beating me in sales this week.” Ana’s dad Jonathan said.  He was a high market real estate agent.  Well, he only did that on the side.  Really, he owned his own business that sold high price wine.

Daphne simply smiled and looked at Ana, pretending to be making conversation. Ana forced a few fake smiles and laughs.  She might as well entertain her father for once.

“Good, he’s seated far away.  So, Ana, you know the rules of the house right?” Jonathan said, swirling his red wine in his glass, breathing in the flavor.

“Yes, Dad.  No shoes on the hardwood or carpet.  Socks are allowed.  Take the trash out when it’s full, bottles go in a separate container.  There is wireless, but it will not be turned on.  The number for the steamship authority is already in my phone, we’ll be fine.  May I please be excused now?  I have places to be.” Ana replied with an undetectable eye roll.

“Sure.  No desert?  You used to love the ice cream sundaes that they make here.” Daphne said, trying to sound ‘hip’ and understanding.

“No, it’s okay, Mom.  I’m lactose intolerant.” Ana said, slowly pushing back her chair and getting up, grabbing her purse from up off of the ground.

She let out a sigh of relief when she pushed open the double doors and felt the breeze of the warm air against her skin.  She went back over to the towel cabana, to talk to Jake.

“Hey, sexy,” Ana said, leaning up against the counter.

“Dinner with D and J end so soon?” He replied, smiling.

“I bailed.  Too much adult talk.” Ana said, taking off her cardigan.

“I see.  Well I get off in ten minutes. Oh, wait.  Can you give me a ride home?  My brother dropped me off since he took back my car.  Hate it when siblings come back from college.” Jake said, tapping his fingers on the wood.

“You excited for Cali?  When do you come up?  Because when you do, it’s party time.  LA and San Diego aren’t that far away right?” Ana said, smiling down at him.

“116 miles.” Jake stated, matter-of-factly.

“Whoa, creeper much?” Ana said, playfully teasing him.

“I only have one other friend in Cali so far, so I need to keep them close.” Jake said, pointing at Ana.  She smiled and got down from her perch atop the counter and walked over towards him.

She muffled his hair and said, “Has it been ten minutes yet?”

“Oh, yeah, let me go punch in my time card and then we can get out of here.” Jake said, getting up off of his chair and walking over towards the employee room.  He took his time card off of the desk and clocked out.  He then quickly grabbed his sweatshirt and went outside to meet Ana.

“Let’s go, Donahue.” Ana said, walking over towards the parking lot.  She unlocked both of their doors and got into the driver’s side.   She turned the CD player on and sped out of the parking lot.

“Do you want to go the park?  I don’t want to go home right now” Jake said, drumming his fingers on the dashboard.

“If you stop hitting my dashboard.” Ana said, shooting him a glare.

“Oh, sorry” Jake said, resting his hand on her knee.

“It’s okay,” Ana said with a smile.

As she pulled into the parking lot, Ana took in a deep breath.  Could she really be falling for Jake?  Of course he was attractive, being a lacrosse and soccer star.  But something about him made Ana’s heart tingle.  He was just so nice, she knew that he was always there for her, and him going to college in the same state as her didn’t make her annoyed, it made her excited for all of the various possibilities.  Maybe it would finally work out for them after all.

Jake got out of the car and walked over towards the swings and sat down.

“Ana, push mee,” He called, swinging back and forth.

“Not on your life, biitch” Ana said, sitting down on his lap.  Jake rested his chin on her shoulder, swinging back and forth.

They sat like that for another two hours, not kissing, not talking, just enjoying each other’s company.  That was what Ana needed, someone who didn’t expect anything of her.  Someone to just sit with and not talk.  Someone who believed in her.
